In going through various submittals I found that the guidelines were not clear on one point. The entry should contain (in the following order) taverner's name: last, first in bold (followed by (ET) if established) location (city or county), colony date of licensing or operation a period author's name: first last name of the book in italics publishing information in parentheses – no comma before the left paren, one after the right paren page number without the word page a period For example St. John (Sention, Sension), Matthias (ET), Norwalk, CT, lic. 17 Dec 1678. Edwin Hall, The Ancient Historical Records of Norwalk, Conn. (Norwalk: 1847, repr. Bowie, MD: Heritage Books, 1997), 70. The reasoning is that some one scanning through for specific data would first be interested in the name, then the location, and then the date. An only if he/she does a Bingo! would they be interested in the citation. Since we are going to have thousands of these entries it is important that they be consistent. One tip to make it easier. If you are extracting many records from the same book replace the citation except for the page number with a goofy code like dqw2. Then you can type in the correction citation once. Go to edit > replace and tell the computer to replace all instances of the goofy code with the citation that you have copied with a Ctrl-c. Use different goofy codes for different citations.
